Jack Healey Commentary April 8th, 2019

I’m going with Texas Tech over Virginia in the NCAA national championship men’s basketball game tonight. Tough one! Who has the momentum? They both won in the semi’s. If you believe in momentum from game to game…..this one should end in a tie!
I wonder how many fans noticed there was a no call on the double dribble in the final seconds of the Virginia-Auburn game on Saturday. I was watching and I didn’t notice it until the commentators pointed it out and they were showing the replay. The foul call at the end on the three point attempt was a good call. Too bad there had to be controversy on the double dribble non call in which 99.9% of the country watching didn’t even notice it.
Charles Barkley does know “there is no cheering in the press box.” right?
Some are saying that the Red Sox will be booed on opening day which includes the ring ceremony because they Sox got off to a bad start.
I don’t think so! It’s about celebrating last year! It has nothing to do with this year so far.
If the Red Sox didn’t win the World Series and this was a regular opening day I think they probably would be booed, but not this time.
I’ve gone to two opening days at Fenway. I went to opening day in 1969 which was Tony Conigliaro’s return to the line-up after sitting out a year. I usually remember these things, but I had to look up what happened that day. Except for the fact that it was Tony C’s return, I didn’t remember who the Sox were playing or who won. The Sox defeated Baltimore 5-3, Ray Culp was the winning pitcher , Sparky Lyle picked up the save and Tony C. had a single in four at bats.
I also went to opening day in 1988. I did remember that Detroit beat the Red Sox as Alan Trammel hit a two run homer off Lee Smith in the 10th inning. Trammel and Smith are both Hall of Famers. I had to look up other details however as the score was 5-3 Detroit and Jack Morris, another Hall of Famer, picked up the win. Morris went 9 innings giving up 3 runs on 9 hits and striking out 9. Mike Henneman pitched the 10th for the save.
Roger Clemens, who should be in the Hall of Fame, started for the Sox and he also went 9 innings giving up 3 runs on 6 hits and striking out 11.
Morris and Trammel both went into the Hall of Fame in 2017 and Smith will be going in this year.
Opening day is special in baseball. It’s pretty much Ho-Hum in the other sports.
